High-Temperature DC-Link - Overview
Advanced Conversion offers a unique portfolio of film capacitor solutions to support operating temperatures ranging from -40C up to 200C. The Advanced Conversion Power Ring Film Capacitor provides a unique aspect ratio with a short height and large diameter that offers the lowest possible ESR and thermal resistance. This enables the highest possible Ampere per Farad rating available, which is critical for increasing power density. These optimal windings can be utilized as discrete components or fully integrated into bus structures when a low inductance configuration is desired. Minimizing the capacitor hotspot temperature rise due to internal heating allows for higher operating temperatures.
Advanced Conversion has pioneered the development of metallized polypropylene capacitor solutions with minimal temperature rise that can operate at up to 105C coolant. While polypropylene is a well-proven and lower cost solution, some applications require higher operating temperatures beyond 105C where cooling of the capacitor is not practical. In many cases, system level costing actually plays out in favor of a higher cost and higher temperature capacitor film to eliminate the need for cooling or to extend service life. Our technology can be readily adapted to higher temperature applications, and we are now offering film capacitor solutions all the way up to 200C.
We can provide KaladexTM PEN HV film from Mylar Specialty Films, which enables operation into the 150C hotspot range with excellent self-healing and reliability. Uniquely, we provide these capacitors with up to thousands of micro-Farads in a single winding element. Just recently, Advanced Conversion has announced a partnership with W. L. Gore & Associates which gives us semi-exclusive access to GORE® High Temperature Film for certain markets, and has finally bridged the gap to 200C operation with demonstrated self-healing. We are providing simple capacitor elements from 10 to 100uF as we transition this product line to Advanced Conversion while supporting existing Gore customers. This industry leading film solution will ultimately become part of the high-performance Advanced Conversion DC Link portfolio.
It is important to note that the added expense of high-temperature film is best harvested when the increased temperature limit is not consumed by temperature rise due to internal capacitor heating (ESR). The Advanced Conversion form factor provides the lowest possible temperature rise for ANY film and thus allows the best exploitation of higher operating temperature with reduced cooling at the highest economic value to the customer application.
